The Bulgarian DSO grid queues have grown dramatically over the past 24 months as developers rush to capture the remaining FiT and premium tariff opportunities and position projects for merchant and corporate PPA structures. Many developers are discovering that the electrical connection process is the longest lead-time item on their critical path.
The most common delays we see at MIG are: incomplete protection relay setting submissions, non-standard cable-installation methods that require re-approval, and switchgear without the locally required manufacturer technical dossier. Addressing these issues upfront — ideally at the design stage — can reduce the commissioning-to-energisation window by 4–8 weeks.
Our recommendations for developers: engage an experienced Bulgarian electrical contractor early (before the grid connection agreement is signed), specify equipment from brands with established DSO acceptance records, and budget for a full engineering supervision team at commissioning rather than relying on the equipment manufacturer's representative alone.
