IEC 62271-200 Edition 3 was published in late 2021 and is now the reference standard for metal-enclosed medium-voltage switchgear. The edition brings several significant changes compared to Edition 2, most notably in the internal arc classification testing procedure.
The new edition introduces a more rigorous test protocol for panels classified IAC A/B/C. Indicators must be positioned closer to the panel and the pressure-relief test must demonstrate functionality at lower test currents than previously required. Panels type-tested to Edition 2 are permitted to reference the old standard for a transitional period, but new designs should be tested to Edition 3.
For purchasers, the practical implication is that tender specifications should reference IEC 62271-200 Ed.3 and request the test laboratory report — not just the test certificate — to verify the test conditions. MIG's current 12 kV and 24 kV metal-clad ranges are being progressively retested to Edition 3, with updated certificates expected by Q3 of this year.
